Teenline 546-5566

Monday - Thursday 4pm-9pm

The TEENLINE is a teen-to-teen telephone helpline for Pueblo's Youth. TEENLINE offers any teenager who has access to a telephone the opportunity to talk about his/her problem, without risk of public exposure and embarrassment. The calls remain confidential, a 'safe haven' to talk about any concern, ranging from problems with family, friends, relationships, or school issues such as depression, drug/alcohol abuse, peer pressure, rape, pregnancy, eating disorders and suicide. The teenline can be utilized to bounce ideas off of another teen. The helpline receives over 1,000 calls a year and has been in operation since 1991.

LEARN TO RECOGNIZE THE DANGER SIGNS!

1. A PREVIOUS SUICIDE ATTEMPT: Many teens who commit suicide have attempted before.

2. VERBAL THREATS: Statements such as: "You'd be better off without me," or "I wish
I were dead" should always be taken seriously.

3. CHANGES IN BEHAVIOR: Normally active teens may become withdrawn and cautious teens may start taking unusual risks. All sudden changes of behavior (good or bad) should be questioned.

4. SUBSTANCE ABUSE: Some suicide attempts/thoughts can be linked to alcohol and drug use.

5. SIGNS OF DEPRESSION: These may include changes in eating and sleeping habits, anxiety, restlessness, fatigue, feelings of hopelessness and guilt, deep sadness, and loss of interest in usual activities. Depression can also look like rage, anger, aggressiveness and self-hate.

6. PROBLEMS IN SCHOOL: A dramatic drop in grades, falling asleep in class, emotional outbursts, irritable and moody behavior that is unusual for that teen.

7. THEMES OF DEATH: A desire to end one's life may show up in the person's artwork, poetry, essays, letters and music they listen to obsessively, etc….
